The FDA has issued a Medtronic insulin pump recall and safety alert for the MiniMed 600 and 700 Series pumps. This recall doesn’t involve removing all products from use, but the FDA has classified it as the most serious type of recall due to potential risks.

The manufacturer has provided a full list of affected devices, as these pumps may experience reduced battery life and shortened shutdown times after a battery alert. Pumps that have been dropped, bumped, or otherwise impacted physically may have damaged electrical components, which could cause the pump to stop insulin delivery much sooner than expected.

Using affected products can lead to serious adverse health consequences, including high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), rapid fat breakdown (diabetic ketoacidosis), and even death. From January 2023 to September 2024, Medtronic reported 170 cases of hyperglycemia (over 400 mg/dL) and 11 cases of diabetic ketoacidosis related to this issue. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported to date.

Stay well and stay informed!
