Antibiotics and Viruses

They don’t play well together; however, physicians prescribe more unnecessary antibiotics during colder months than warmer months. One study found that between October and March (winter) more inappropriate prescriptions for antibiotics were written, 72.4% compared to 62% during April through September (summer).

Why you ask? Well, there is likely more than one reason however, researchers found that decision fatigue could be a factor since providers are treating more respiratory tract infections during the winter. I personally believe that many times physicians are challenged by their patients coming in and asking for an antibiotic. I remember as a child, if I sniffled, my parents would say “time to go to the doctor and get a shot of penicillin!”

With COVID on the rise again and flu season right around the corner, it might be time to meet with your infection preventionist, medical director and pharmacist and come up with a plan. Certainly, our seniors are at a higher risk for complications of seasonal flu however, antibiotics aren’t the answer. Discuss options such as anti-viral medications, managing symptoms and keeping residents comfortable as they recover. It is also a good idea to discuss plans to prevent outbreaks that would require isolation and/or mandatory masking. Ah yes, flu season, let’s work together to keep the viruses under control and be sure to take a look at HealthCap’s vaccine toolkit! Stay well and stay informed!
