We all have our favorite brew, whether it is a cup of Java or an IPA but how many of you have tea as your favorite brew? I personally enjoy tea, hot tea, cold tea, doesn’t matter really, just depends on the weather and my mood. Of course, I am not a huge fan of green tea which most nutritionists say is full of good things and has health benefits!

New research from the University of Georgia suggests that something as simple as a cup of tea can help in the fight against COVID-19! Yep, honest! What the study demonstrated was how certain teas inactivate SARS-CoV-2 in saliva, in some cases by up to 99.9%! Researcher Malak Esselli stated, “inactivating SARS-CoV-2 in the mouth and the throat matters because that potentially reduces the introduction of the virus to the lower respiratory system”!

Who knew! As with anything that sounds too good to be true, there is a caveat, the tea must be consumed with no additives. If you are from England, you likely use cream in your hot tea, if you are from the United States of Starbucks, you likely have flavors, creamers, sweeteners, etc. added to your tea. If that’s the case, your tea won’t work at deactivating the SARS-CoV-2 virus; plain, unadorned tea is what inactivates SARS-CoV-2 in saliva. Take away? Learn to drink plain, unadorned tea, it may just keep you healthy in a world full of germs and viruses and maybe you will drop those extra 5 pounds you haven’t been able to shed! Stay well and stay informed!
