Food for Thought

Soft drinks, salty and sugary snacks, ice cream, sausage, deep-fried chicken, yogurt, canned baked beans, tomatoes, ketchup, mayonnaise, packaged guacamole, packaged hummus, packaged breads, and flavored cereals. Do I have your attention? How about potato chips, chocolate candy, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, and french fries? See I knew I could get your attention! If these are “staples” in your diet or the diet of the people you love, listen up!

All of these foods are considered “UPFs” (ultra-processed foods). Consumption of UPFs has increased over the past 30 years and are thought to induce systemic inflammation and are linked to a variety of ailments such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Nothing we weren’t already aware of, right? However, now researchers are considering the risks of UPFs on cognitive health as well. Yep, these foods may also contribute to cognitive decline.

Percy Griffin, PhD, director of scientific engagement for the Alzheimer’s Association said there is “growing evidence that what we eat can impact our brains as we age.” Previous studies have suggested that a heart-healthy, balanced diet that is low in processed foods and high in nutritional foods is best for overall health, including brain health. So, do you deny yourself that Klondike bar tonight? NO! My momma always said, “anything in moderation.” Research is important to all of us, however, be reasonable, maybe substitute the Lucky Charms every morning with some bran flakes (not every day), grab an apple instead of a handful of Cheezits – keep it simple. Remember, small changes over time can have a positive impact on your health! Stay well and stay informed!
