Remember the old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”? It couldn’t be more relevant right now, especially with the latest Listeria outbreak traced back to frozen supplemental shakes. This issue is particularly concerning for senior living communities, as these products were distributed to hospitals and post-acute care facilities around the country. The FDA is currently investigating frozen shakes from Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial, which have been linked to multiple illnesses and deaths across 21 states. These shakes are intended for individuals needing nutritional supplements, making it even more important for senior living communities to be on alert.

Listeria monocytogenes is particularly dangerous for adults aged 65 and older, as they are more vulnerable to severe infections. Symptoms can appear up to 70 days after exposure and include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and more severe complications such as confusion and loss of balance. In extreme cases, Listeria can lead to life-threatening conditions, including septicemia and meningitis. The bacteria can survive in refrigerated temperatures, making thorough cleaning and sanitation practices essential to prevent cross-contamination.

The FDA urges communities to stop serving these products immediately, dispose of them safely, and sanitize any surfaces they may have touched. Staff should closely monitor residents for symptoms, especially those with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions. If symptoms appear, seek medical attention promptly, as early intervention can significantly reduce complications.

In addition to not providing the affected shakes to your residents, senior living communities should review their food safety protocols. This includes ensuring all food storage areas are regularly cleaned and sanitized and reinforcing handwashing procedures among staff. Being proactive demonstrates a strong commitment to maintaining your resident’s well-being. By staying alert and informed about the risk of Listeria infections associated with frozen supplemental shakes, communities can better protect their residents.
