Are you ready to celebrate National Nursing Home Week with your residents, family, community and caregivers?  As we approach the annual week of celebration we should also reflect on the special things that go on in our buildings every day of the year.

Yes, everyone loves a celebration and your team is probably in the process of scheduling events, purchasing prizes, inviting community members, writing press releases, etc.  These events are a great way to say thank you to those who make this week special but do we let it stop there?

As we approach these days of celebration let us take a moment to remember that random acts of kindness throughout the year are more important than a week of festivities.  Remember, as a leader in your building  you to set the tone, you are the example.  Spend a few extra minutes each day asking residents and caregivers about their children, an ailing parent, an aging pet or simply how things are going.

The most successful facilities are those where caregivers are appreciated not only for what they do but for who they are.  We are all unique with individual needs and challenges; recognizing this in each of your employees will serve to enhance the working relationship while improving overall care delivery.

Take a moment to evaluate your leadership skills.  Are you the leader people look up to and respect?  Even more importantly, would you work for yourself?  Many times it is difficult to see ourselves through others eyes but it can be very enlightening!  Enjoy your work, share your enthusiasm, show appreciation for the little things in life and remember those special residents and caregivers everyday.
