At the risk of being a bummer, I need to have a conversation with you all about the upcoming holidays and the celebrations we all enjoy. Alcohol. I know, “but it is the holidays” and yes, it is the holidays, and we should enjoy responsibly. But, remember, alcohol is known to induce headaches when consumed in large quantities. Although not yet adequately explained, red wine is associated with more headaches than other forms of alcohol.
Keep reading, it will be okay, I promise! There is an explanation. Alcohol is metabolized by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase in the gut and liver. That turns it into acetaldehyde, a toxic metabolite. Most of us quickly metabolize this chemical into a form that can be safely excreted. However, researchers found that some of us can’t excrete this chemical quickly, resulting in the aftereffects of drinking red wine. Particularly people with East Asian ancestry, they often experience facial flushing, nausea, and headache when they partake in red wine.
Back to my moderation soap box and my “if it hurts when you do that, don’t do that”! We are all in a festive mood this time of year. We are enjoying our families (for the most part) and some holiday cheer. Whether that be red wine, white wine, hot buttered rum, or any combination. Drink responsibly or not at all. To the world you may be one person but to one person you are the world. Stay safe and happy holidays!
