Retirement

Remember when grandpa retired from the job that he held for 25 years? It was a huge deal, he got the “watch,” and he was “old” in our eyes! Yet, in hindsight, grandpa was likely 55 years old, not old but in the eyes of a child, 55 years old is ancient! Those were the good old days, when you retired at 55 years old, collected social security, and lived a long (relatively speaking) and happy retirement! Things have definitely changed!

In 1991, the average retirement age was 57 years old and today it is 66 years old, that’s a huge difference! Why, you ask? One reason is that the age you can access full social security benefits has changed. If you were born after 1960 you are not eligible for full social security benefits until you are 67 years old. Is that the only reason? Surely not! People are healthier, more productive and have a longer life expectancy than grandpa’s era did, thus they “make hay while the sun shines.”

I also think that people are doing “work” that they enjoy. It is rare to find someone who will retire from their first job after 30 years. We are braver, more inquisitive, and won’t settle if we aren’t happy doing what we do. Remember, if you love what you do you won’t “work” a day in your life. Maybe a stretch but seriously, be happy with your work life! Maintain a home/work life balance, enjoy your leisure time, sleep in on the weekend, visit with friends and family, and the work week will seem shorter and more enjoyable. Stay well and stay informed!
