Say It Isn’t So! Another Mask Mandate in Skilled Nursing Facilities

Another mask mandate in skilled nursing facilities? Say it isn’t so! San Mateo County, California, has issued Order No. F26-1 of the Health Officer. This order requires everyone, except residents, to wear a face mask in patient care areas during the designated winter respiratory virus period. However, there are limited exceptions. Furthermore, the requirement applies regardless of vaccination status.

Maybe I’m odd, but reading this sent chills up my spine. It brings back memories of the horrendous COVID-19 pandemic, along with the trauma our residents endured. I remember when our faces were covered with N95 masks. It made it difficult to breathe, especially when performing care for a resident.

According to the San Mateo County Health Officer’s Order No. F26-1, a face mask must fit well and cover the nose and mouth. Acceptable masks include surgical masks, KN95s, KF94s, and N95s. However, scarves, ski masks, balaclavas, bandanas, turtlenecks, collars, and cloth masks do not qualify. Masks with unfiltered one-way exhaust valves are also excluded.

I will step off my soapbox soon, but what happened to basic infection control practices? For example, maybe if you are not feeling well, you stay home instead of sharing viruses. Additionally, what about the impact on our residents (again)? They will not be able to tell if you are smiling at them as you interact.

I’m also unclear how this mask mandate in skilled nursing facilities in California will impact other states. Hopefully, not at all. Remember the good old days when we cared for residents, understanding that viruses are everywhere? After all, there is risk with everything we do on a person-to-person level.

I pray other states do not follow suit. We are weary from mandates such as these, especially when they appear to be unnecessary.

Stay well and stay informed!
