We’re Better Together! Social Connection in Senior Living

Did you know that loneliness and social isolation have become such a concern that federal legislation has been introduced to address them? The National Strategy for Social Connection Act would establish an Office of Social Connection Policy and develop a national strategy to promote social connection. That’s right, loneliness isn’t just about feeling lonely. Social connection in senior living, and throughout our communities, can have an impact on health, well-being, and quality of life.

So, what can we do about it? Maybe we should start by looking at some of our four-legged friends! A recent study of animal-assisted support programs in long-term care found that these programs were viewed as acceptable and worthwhile. Participants identified potential improvements in mood and social engagement for residents. Researchers also noted that these programs may offer benefits for residents living with and without dementia.

And it doesn’t necessarily stop with scheduled animal visits. The Mather Institute took a deeper dive into pet ownership among “solo agers”, or older adults who are not married, live alone, and do not have adult children they can rely on as they age. Of the 600 pet owners surveyed, 76% reported improved emotional well-being, 62% reported reduced stress, and 45% reported increased physical activity. In addition, 73% said their pets gave them a greater sense of purpose, while 82% indicated their pets provided significant emotional support. Perhaps most interesting, 49% said their pets reduced feelings of loneliness “a great deal.”

Loneliness can become especially important as residents approach the end of life. Research highlighted by McKnight’s Long-Term Care News reminds us that addressing loneliness at the end of life is more than a social issue. It is also a quality-of-life issue. As physical function changes, social circles become smaller, and residents experience loss, meaningful human connection may become even more important.

This is all great information, but only if you use it! Take a look around your community. Are there residents who rarely participate in activities? Residents without regular visitors? Someone who recently lost a spouse, friend, or beloved pet? How are you addressing social connection in senior living for those residents? Consider animal-assisted support programs, pet-friendly policies, volunteer programs, one-on-one visits, or simply creating more opportunities for meaningful interaction. One program will not work for every resident, so ask them what connection looks like to them.

Sometimes improving quality of life doesn’t start with another medication or clinical intervention. It may start with a conversation, a visit, a new friendship, or even a wagging tail!

Stay well and stay informed!
