Have you ever read a story that stopped you in your tracks and made you thankful for the work you do every day? If not, this one might do just that. It’s a powerful reminder of how quickly life can shift—and how essential it is to be ready when it does. On March 14, 2025, a fierce grass fire tore through the open prairie in eastern Kansas, heading straight for Yates Center Health and Rehabilitation. This small, respected 5-star senior living community had little warning before flames threatened everything.

Thanks to a well-practiced Emergency Preparedness Plan, staff and volunteers jumped into action without hesitation. In a matter of minutes, they managed to evacuate all 37 residents. Just two required hospital care, which speaks volumes about their quick thinking and calm response under pressure. Nikki Jacobs, former administrator and now regional vice president for Mission Health Communities, arrived on-site almost immediately. Living in Yates Center herself, she saw firsthand how that plan made all the difference—and, interestingly enough, how even simple items like pillows became vital tools in the process.

While the physical structure may face a total loss due to fire, sprinkler water damage, and smoke exposure, the spirit of the Yates Center community remains unshaken. Mission Health Communities is stepping up, providing comfort, care, and ongoing support to residents, their loved ones, and those who stood on the front lines.

This event reminds us that nature doesn’t wait—and we must be ready before disaster strikes. A current Emergency Preparedness Plan, along with well-informed staff who know exactly what to do, can mean the difference between chaos and coordinated care.

The incredible work by Yates Center staff, local volunteers, family members, and first responders deserves our deepest thanks. Their quick response didn’t just protect property—it protected lives.

Stay well and stay informed!
