If you have never had to discuss the benefits of senior housing with an elderly relative, let me just say it can be difficult. Most seniors want to maintain their independence, live in the home they raised their children in, go to the church they always went to, and just stay in familiar surroundings. Sadly, although they may want to, they may not be safe! What do you do when they say, “I don’t want to live in one of those places”?
To start, you could discuss the findings from a study conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago. They recently completed the final research component of a four-part study that focused on the health outcomes of individuals residing in senior housing communities. The study shows that there are health and wellness advantages for older adults who move into senior living compared to living in the greater community including:
• Less vulnerability – older adults become more vulnerable to adverse health outcomes before they move into senior housing, but vulnerability levels off and declines shortly after moving in.
• More healthcare services at home – older adults who move into senior living receive more healthcare services from care providers compared to community-dwelling seniors.
• Increased longevity – older adults living in senior housing live more than one week longer and have a lower mortality rate.
• Better health outcomes – older adults living in senior housing have lower rates of inpatient hospital admissions.
Understanding the benefits of senior housing is an important aspect of overall care for older adults but trying to convince them of that might be tricky. Good luck, reach out to experts for assistance! Stay well and stay informed!
